Creating Headspace for Parents

At Little Shadow we offer counselling and support for parents experiencing perinatal distress, including baby loss and infertility. (Perinatal means anything to do with pregnancy, birth and the first years of a baby's life.) We provide you with a safe, non judgemental space to seek healing, resilience and empowerment.

Our counsellors are professionally trained to help you navigate perinatal distress. From depression to grief, loss, anxiety and trauma. Our counsellors genuinely relate – many have experienced perinatal distress, and all of them are parents.

Why counselling?

Counselling is a useful tool for healing and gaining clarity over your life. Counselling can help you to find choices and meaning in your experiences. Talking out loud gives clarity and fresh perspective to your thoughts.

What’s counselling like?

We listen and reflect, creating a safe space to help you discover fresh perspective and inner strength. We help you imagine how these ideas might look if you integrated them into your life.

Everyone is different. You might need just a handful of sessions to provide you with clarity – or you may want ongoing support to tackle deeper issues. Whatever your needs, counselling can help support your journey.

The details

We offer counselling across Wellington, from Newtown to Johnsonville, Petone, Upper Hutt, and Paraparaumu.

Prices range from $35 – $60 depending on your counsellors experience and qualification. We also offer counselling in Japanese, Mandarin and within a kaupapa Maori context.

Once we have referred you, your chosen counsellor will be in touch within 72 hours to organise your first session.

We are committed to removing as many barriers to attending as possible for parents. All of our venues are child friendly, and you can bring babies 2 years and under if you need to. Prices seem out of reach? Get in touch to discuss options around subsidies that you might be eligible for.

I have experienced PND with both my son and daughter, who are 15 years apart. I draw on a number of different techniques and philosophies, including kaupapa Māori, grounding my practise in a person centred approach. I work alongside my clients, drawing on their strengths and resources, finding a way for them to move towards wellness. I am a qualified yoga teacher, and offer grounding and mindfulness exercises as part of my sessions as an option if clients choose.

As part of the Little Shadow team, I bring to you my own experience as a mother to two children, and my own struggle raising to children while coping (or not!) with post natal distress. I bring a genuine caring and openness to our my focus in counselling sessions. I provide a non-judgemental space in which you can feel safe in the knowledge that whatever you communicate and share will be met with empathy and understanding for what you may be experiencing. I will work honestly and collaboratively with you toward a point of growth and change that will enable you to have a positive and well-supported experience of motherhood, fatherhood, or parenthood.

Maria Milmine

2ND YEAR STUDENT, BACHELOR OF COUNSELLING; STUDENT AFFILIATE, NZAC

I am a mum to two kids and I enjoy living in Wellington. At the beginning of my parenthood journey I experienced struggles with fertility, multiple miscarriages and periods of post and antenatal distress. I have a lot of gratitude for the counsellors that supported me through such difficult times. This gratitude combined with around 10 years experience in people centred, community based roles has resulted in a passion for supporting others through counselling. I am grounded in person centred therapy and enjoy working collaboratively to ensure your needs and goals are met. I aim to provide empathy without judgement and a space for you to come and be listened to.

My fee is $35 per hour, and I am available in Petone (Thursdays) and Johnsonville (Fridays).

Anita Edwards

BA (EDUCATION); GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN COUNSELLING PRACTICE; PROVISIONAL MEMBER, NZAC

Kia Ora, I’m Anita. I’m a mother of two boys, and step mum to one. I experienced PND with both my children and used PND Wellington’s great services. I believe that ultimately we know ourselves best. I see my role as reflecting back what I am hearing, seeing and sensing to help you sift through your thoughts and experiences to clarify what they mean for you. Beyond this I support you in discovering what you need and how that can be achieved.

My fee is $60 per hour. I am available in Petone on Wednesday and Thursday during school hours.

BACHELOR OF COUNSELLING; PROVISIONAL MEMBER, NZAC

Kia Ora, I'm Jane. I am a mother of two children and have previously worked in a range of community and people-centred roles. I have benefitted enormously from my own experience of counselling, and I see my counselling practice as providing a supportive place to understand the things that clients are struggling with and examine possibilities for change. I have a particular interest in working with clients experiencing grief and trauma.

My fee is $60 per hour. I am available in Johnsonville and Newtown.

Rachel Brown

BA; PGDip.Teach; STUDENT, MASTER OF COUNSELLING STUDIES

My focus in counselling is to work with individuals and couples to find wellness and strength within themselves and their relationships. My practice is seated in a pluralistic counselling framework. I have three children of my own, and have worked in antenatal education for the last 11 years, bringing care and warmth to those journeying into parenthood for the first time (and beyond). This work has given me insight and perspective into the range of experiences that welcoming a new baby can bring, and it is a privilege to continue to continue and expand upon my work with parents at Little Shadow.

My fee is $35 per hour. I am available in Paraparaumu (Mondays) and Newtown.

I practise Multicultural Counselling and Client-Centred Practise. My Mother tongue is Japanese and I’m fluent in Mandarin and English. I am a mother of two children and have experienced PND. I found it is very important to seek help before it gets worse. My goal is to provide counselling and information about PND in Japanese and Chinese so people have a better understanding of PND and more options for support.

My fee is $60 per hour. I am available in Wellington City.
